How to Clean Moroccan Brass Lamps Safely

Handcrafted Moroccan brass ceiling light with intricate hand-pierced cut-out patterns and floral shadows

Moroccan brass lamps bring warmth and patterned light into a room. A little regular care keeps them looking their best, but the right method depends on the finish. Many decorative pieces have a protective coating, so ordinary brass polish can do more harm than good.

Start with the finish

Glow of Morocco lamps are offered in Gold, Cooper, Silver, and Black finishes. A warm gold appearance does not necessarily mean bare brass. If you are unsure whether a surface is lacquered or coated, treat it as protected: dust gently and avoid polishing compounds. Our guide to how hand-pierced brass lamps are made and finished explains why the finish matters.

Routine dusting

Switch the lamp off, unplug it, and let the bulb and metal cool. Wipe the outside with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. For pierced patterns and narrow details, use a very soft, dry brush and work slowly so the bristles lift dust without catching on an edge. Do not push cloth or tools through the perforations.

For fingerprints or a small mark

Dampen a soft cloth with clean water and wring it out thoroughly. Test a small, inconspicuous area first. Wipe lightly, keep moisture away from sockets, wiring, seams, and openings, then dry the surface at once with another soft cloth. If the mark does not lift easily, stop rather than scrubbing.

What to avoid

Abrasive pads, metal polish, scouring powder, ammonia, acidic cleaners, vinegar, lemon, baking soda, solvents, and all-purpose sprays can scratch or dull a coating. Avoid soaking the lamp or spraying cleaner directly onto it. Do not disassemble a wired fixture to clean it; leave electrical inspection and repair to a qualified professional.

When tarnish or damage appears

Do not assume that a dark mark is tarnish that should be polished away. It may be part of the finish or a change to its protective layer. Check the care instructions supplied with your lamp or ask the seller for finish-specific advice before using any product. If the coating is peeling or the metal is deeply stained, get guidance before attempting restoration.

A simple care routine

Dust gently every few weeks, clean only when needed, and keep the lamp away from persistent moisture. These small steps help preserve the surface and the crisp shadows cast by its pierced pattern. Explore the Moroccan brass lamp collection to compare the available styles and finishes.
